The crankcase ventilation oil separator purges the oil vapour from the sump to the rocker cover. It stops oil from rising and allows the oil vapours to be released. Oil separators can fail due to the internal diaphragm splitting. If the oil separator is faulty it may cause your car's engine to run rough.
A damaged oil separator breather hose can force pressure from the crankcase ventilation system to be expelled into the atmosphere, causing your car's engine to run rough and result in poor fuel efficiency. Depending on the position of the hose in relation to the oil separator oil may also be expelled causing an unwanted oil leak.
