The valve stem seal controls the rate of oil to the valve stem, lubricates the valve guide and reduces engine emissions. If the valve stem seals are worn, the valve guides can either be flooded with oil or not receive enough oil for proper lubrication. Some common symptoms of bad valve stem seals can be a cloud of blue-white smoke from the tailpipe just after start-up or when idling for long periods, increased oil consumption due to worn and leaking valve stem seals can also cause spark plugs to foul and misfire.
