Temperature change causes the engine coolant to expand and contract. The coolant expansion tank gives the expanding and contracting fluid somewhere to go. It is quite common for the plastic tank to split, crack or even burst. If your tank fails it can cause coolant loss and result in major engine damage. A faulty cap can also cause the tank to over pressurize and split.
The coolant expansion tank cap maintains an elevated cooling system pressure to raise the boiling point of the liquid coolant, while venting excessive pressure to the atmosphere. These caps have a limited service life; they should be pressure-tested as part of a routine maintenance schedule, and replaced as part of any major cooling system overhaul.
