Coolant passes through the engine oil cooler (also known as a heat exchanger) reducing the temperature of the engine oil to improve engine performance. The oil cooler can fail resulting in the engine oil and coolant mixing! It's recommended to replace the gasket at the same time.
This engine oil cooler gasket seals the engine oil cooler to the engine block. It is quite common to fail, leak and result in loss of engine oil. Keeping oil inside your engine is extremely important for proper lubrication and performance. It is recommended that you replace the gasket whenever the oil cooler is removed or replaced.
