Temperature change causes the engine coolant to expand and contract. The coolant expansion tank gives the expanding and contracting fluid somewhere to go. It is quite common for the plastic tank to split, crack or even burst. If your tank fails it can cause coolant loss and result in major engine damage. A faulty cap can also cause the tank to over pressurize and split.
The cooling system in your car is kept under pressure to raise the boiling point of the coolant. When the coolant system reaches a specific pressure threshold the coolant cap acts as a release valve, vents the excessive pressure, and draws coolant into the expansion tank. When the coolant temperature and pressure decrease coolant is returned from the expansion tank into the rest of the cooling system. The coolant cap, also known as the expansion tank cap or radiator cap should be changed when ever the expansion tank is replaced or a part of any cooling system overhaul. If a coolant cap is faulty and not releasing pressure it can lead to over pressurizing the coolant system. This can lead to splitting the expansion tank.
